One-visit Colonoscopy Simplifies the Often-dreaded Procedure

Scheduling a colonoscopy is not something anyone anticipates with pleasure. In fact, so much anxiety and fear of the unknown is associated with the procedure that many put off having one indefinitely or until serious health issues arise. Dr. Telciane Vesa, a gastroenterologist at Merit Health Medical Group in Jackson, said patients often focus on the prep work required beforehand without considering the benefits of undergoing what can often be a life-saving test.
“Many patients have never had a colonoscopy but have only heard the negative aspects of the procedure, especially the required preparation the day before,” said Dr. Vesa. “Hearing stories from others of their experiences with the laxative-type drink may cause some to postpone their own procedure. In some cases, someone that really needs a colonoscopy may choose to forego the test indefinitely. It is very important that everyone between the ages of 50 and 75 undergo this exam, regardless of whether or not they are experiencing symptoms. The positive aspects of learning you are completely healthy or that we’ve caught a potential problem early are well worth any discomfort.”
According to the American Cancer Society, over 100,000 Americans are annually diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of cancer-related death for both men and women. However, if it is caught early, colorectal cancer has a 90% survival rate, said Dr. Vesa.
“Not only does a colonoscopy screen for colorectal cancer, but it is also one of the only screening tests that can actually prevent colon cancer,” she said. “ In many instances, I am able to find and remove colon polyps before they become cancer. Stopping the development of polyps into cancer is not only painless for the patient at that moment, but prevents a multitude of health issues, procedures and treatments down the road that immeasurably impact the patient’s life.”
One of the advantages of scheduling a colonoscopy with Dr. Vesa is the ability to receive the procedure in one visit. Unlike many physicians, Dr. Vesa does not require a pre-procedure office appointment. Patients without special health considerations may call and schedule a colonoscopy. Not having to visit the office prior to the procedure means less time off from work and other regular activities.
Dr. Vesa said that although most do not need to schedule a colonoscopy until age 50, she may recommend the first colonoscopy at age 45. Those with a close relative (parent, sibling or child) who has had colorectal cancer, or African Americans, who are more susceptible to the disease, may be advised to start earlier. The good news is that it is only necessary to undergo the test once every 10 years, unless the doctor finds any polyps the first time. Then a second colonoscopy may be prescribed within 3 to 5 years.
Dr. Vesa said the procedure typically takes less than an hour and patients normally awaken with no pain or discomfort. If polyps are found, they are removed during the procedure.
“The colonoscopy is considered the gold standard in preventing colon cancer due to the fact that detection is combined with treatment,” said Dr. Vesa. “Yes, there is a small window of discomfort during the pre-colonoscopy prep work. However, it’s a very small price to pay for peace of mind and most important, cancer prevention and early detection.”
Dr. Vesa’s clinic is located at 1860 Chadwick Dr., Suite 351 in Jackson adjacent to Merit Health Central. For more information on undergoing a colonoscopy or to schedule an appointment, call (601) 376-COLO (2656).
